New Year...New-ish You?




The start of a new year often brings with it a wave of enthusiasm to make positive changes in our lives. New Year's resolutions are a tradition embraced by millions around the world. Like them, love them, or loathe them, they come around every year.


And, because of them, in the beginning of January, it feels as though everyone is unstoppable.


It feels like no one is cranky on Mondays, the gyms are always crowded, and social media is flooded with posts of newly developed, healthy routines. However, as the weeks pass, the initial motivation can wane, and resolutions may be left by the wayside.


My clients and I have recently reviewed some strategies to 'crack the code' and master the art of keeping New Year's resolutions.


  1. Set Realistic and Achievable Goals: One common pitfall when making resolutions is setting overly ambitious or unrealistic goals. Instead of aiming for a complete overhaul of your lifestyle, break down your objectives into smaller, more manageable tasks. This not only makes the goals less daunting but also increases the likelihood of success.

  2. Create a Reasonable Plan of Action: Having a resolution is just the first step; the key to success lies in creating a concrete plan to achieve it. Outline the specific steps you need to take, set deadlines, and establish milestones. A well-thought-out plan provides direction and helps you stay on track.

  3. Stay Accountable: Share your resolutions with friends or family members who can provide support and encouragement. Accountability can be a powerful motivator. Consider forming a resolution group or finding an accountability partner to share your progress and setbacks. Knowing that others are aware of your goals can help keep you focused.

  4. Embrace the Journey, Not Just the Destination: Achieving resolutions is often a journey with ups and downs. Instead of fixating solely on the end result, celebrate the small victories along the way. Recognize and appreciate the progress you make, and use setbacks as opportunities to learn and adjust your approach.

  5. Foster a Positive Mindset: Maintaining a positive mindset is crucial when working towards your resolutions. Instead of dwelling on perceived failures, focus on the lessons learned and the progress made. Replace negative self-talk with affirmations that reinforce your commitment to your goals.

  6. Adaptability is Key: Life is unpredictable, and circumstances may change. Be flexible and willing to adapt your resolutions as needed. If a particular approach isn't working, don't be afraid to modify your plan or set new priorities. The ability to adapt increases the likelihood of long-term success.
